Interview with ZTT Records designer, David Smart

Posted by jorbell on March 26, 2011

As a child of the 80s I was very much fan of the bands Frankie goes to Hollywood, Art of Noise and Propaganda. Coincidentally there were all on the same record label, Zang Tuum Tumb, or to give it its more familiar name, ZTT.

Art and design has always been an interest of mine too so the sleeve art always fascinated me. Former music journalist Paul Morley was catalyst for many of the ideas for the ‘look’ of the label and the brainchild of its groundbreaking marketing. Paul worked with David Smart to create some iconic designs which still look great to this day.

Design, Copywriting and Marketing services at a fee YOU set!

Posted by jorbell on September 26, 2010

Many companies in these troubled economic times are finding it increasingly difficult to advertise their products and services effectively due to rising operating costs. The temptation is to try and save money by doing it yourself but this can be a false economy as any marketing strategy needs to be carefully considered to ensure it achieves the maximum impact. In an offer designed to give your business the best chance of success I am offering my services in a special ‘try before you buy’ way.

Here’s the marketing spiel…

Do you have a job or task which you want taking off your hands? Has it been sat there for weeks or months just gathering dust? What would you give to just to get it out of the way so you can move forward again.

Do you need a logo creating or a leaflet designed? What about some advertising or brochure copy? Maybe you need assistance with social networking strategy or someone to review your website who will see it with fresh eyes?

Basically I will undertake any project for you and will do it for whatever you think it is worth. If you don’t feel what I have done is right for you or your business then you can decide to pay nothing. It’s that simple.

Two decades of design and marketing experience is at your disposal. You – or any of your friends and associates for that matter – could be about to net yourself a bargain! Just use the contact me facility at the top of the page to put in your request.

Offer available until the 24 October 2010.

Posted by jorbell on March 12, 2010

NEW OFFER FOR AUTUMN 2010

How about this for an offer? Up until the end of March September 2010 I am offering up to 5 hours of design, writing and marketing time per person at whatever price you want it to be!

Do you have a job or task which you want taking off your hands? Has it been sat there for weeks or months just gathering dust? What would you give to just to get it out of the way so you can move forward again.

Why am I doing this? Well, why not? There’s honestly no hidden agenda so what do you have to lose?

Take a look at my About page profile and other blog entries – is there anything there that you feel you could tap into that would make life a little easier for you? Do you need a logo creating or a leaflet designed? What about some advertising or brochure copy? Maybe you need advice on social networking or someone to review your website who will see it with fresh eyes?

In summary I am offering up to 5 hours of my time for a fee that YOU decide. You don’t even need to pay up front. What you pay will be the price that you think the work is worth. Come on, what do you have to lose?

If you have such a task in mind or any questions please use my Contact Me page to get in touch – I’ll be happy to help in any way I can.

When does a newsletter become a magazine?

Posted by jorbell on July 10, 2009

HotLINX - a company newsletter or magazine?

HotLINX - newsletter or magazine?

When our company newsletter first launched in the year 2000, it was issued as an occasional, member only document. Over time it has developed to become a regular quarterly publication read by stakeholders right across the Internet industry.

Traditionally the newsletter contained just eight A4 pages with a print run of around 500 copies but it now maintains a 16 page format with an increased circulation of 1250. Each issue is now also downloaded a further 1000 times a quarter from our website.

I’ve noticed that despite the increased number of pages it is still referred to as a newsletter which doesn’t bother me greatly but I personally think it is far more than that. Maybe I’m getting a little defensive because I design, write and sub-edit the thing.

20 years in design and marketing, my 10 Best and Worst events

Posted by jorbell on June 15, 2009

On Twitter earlier today someone had posted a link to a blog post about their top five best and worst perks over 10 years working in the journalism industry.

RT @swhittle: My blog: 10 years in journalism, my 10 Best and Worst PR moments. http://bit.ly/7NR0S

There were some very amusing tales in there which has prompted me to write my own list which, while not at all matching his, are pretty cool in their own particular ways.

Newsletter Design

HotLINX magazine

Today I am going to give an overview on newsletters and how to design them.

To demonstrate the finer workings of this form of communication, I am announcing the upcoming launch of the official OC newsletter to show how the layout can be developed stage-by-stage.

The picture to the right is an example of a newsletter / magazine cover design. This particular publication is called HotLINX, which I write, design, sub-edit and distribute to over 40 countries. It is linked to a 12 page PDF which you are free to download. I will be using this style as the basis for the new OC newsletter and I have already begun preparing a layout which you yourselves can follow for your own business or community project.

Is it better to work in a large corporation or a small business?

Posted by jorbell on November 6, 2008

My career to date seems to be gearing me towards self-employment. When I first started out on the ladder in the mid-80s, I worked for a world renowned Insurance company with 4000 others. With it being my first job I was little more than a stickleback in the Pacific.

Perhaps unsurprisingly I began with very menial tasks such as fielding calls from customers wanting claim forms, filing and hurling boxes at other temporary staff in the basement.
