Many companies in these troubled economic times are finding it increasingly difficult to advertise their products and services effectively due to rising operating costs. The temptation is to try and save money by doing it yourself but this can be a false economy as any marketing strategy needs to be carefully considered to ensure it achieves the maximum impact. An Inconvenient PR Truth – the fight against PR spam

When preparing press releases it is important to consider very carefully your target market and whether you are reaching them via the right channels. It is easy to think that swamping the industry news sites with your release will yield results but this is nothing more than a hit and hope strategy and it’s technically a form of spamming. It’s like throwing mud and hoping that at least some of it sticks.

I have to admit this is something that is can be difficult to get right. However, as so many organisations issue their press releases in this way it becomes a deluge with the net result that editors are less inclined to give your message a chance. A sure way to annoy them is to waste their time by providing irrelevant information.

Only this week a new campaign has been launched against this kind of PR spam by agency Realwire. A website, An Inconvenient PR Truth, has been set up to highlight the problem and has received strong support within the industry.

Promoting your business for free

If you or your organisation has something to say getting your message across is very important but in financially difficult times many are taking the decision that the cost of distributing that message is too great. This is understandable if you stick only to traditional methods of promotion such as PR agencies but more and more ways of promoting a business are available now than ever before for little or no cost.

Twitter can breathe life into older content

Yesterday afternoon I made four Twitter posts which listed all the external organisations featured in each of the last four issues of the LINX magazine, HotLINX. Each one included a link to the respective PDF they featured in. The result of this communication went well thanks largely to users interested in Extreme Networks.

Extreme featured in HotLINX17 which was published back in February and one of my followers saw my Tweet and decided then to re-Tweet it for their followers. This in turn was re-Tweeted again by further users. In total it was posted nine times resulting in 50 additional downloads inside an hour. This has led to me gaining new followers and our magazine gaining a wider readership.

The message is clear – there are people out there who are interested in what we are saying in the LINX magazine but if they don’t know about it, they can’t do anything about that information. If they are given the choice they can at least decide how to react to it.

Advertising and how running ads in a series increases awareness

Leo Burnett, an advertising executive renown for creating icons such as the Jolly Green Giant, the 7up “Spot” and Tony the Tiger amongst others once said:

“If you don’t get noticed, you don’t have anything. You just have to be noticed, but the art is in getting noticed naturally, without screaming or without tricks. It is not the creation of new and tricky words and pictures, but one of putting familiar words and pictures into new relationships.”

Raising awareness of your product service can be achieved with a strong, consistent campaign over an extended period of time. This does not mean repeating the same advert month after month in a publication because, while it can be effective, it is dependent on the proposition being strong in the first place. Just giving an ad time to bed-in does not guarantee success and will certainly not become any more persuasive if it does not produce the desired results early on. Indeed, research has shown that advertising is effective either immediately, or not at all.
