The cover story focuses on the impact streaming media has had on networks during the summer months. In the UK in particular, traffic has risen sharply as Internet users kept up to date with what was happening in the General Election, the Budget as well as with sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup and Wimbledon.

Below is an extract from the article as featured in HotLINX22.

Changing habits in TV and Internet usageThere appears to be a change in the way that people are using the Internet and television. Where once it was a ‘one or the other’ activity, users often now have the TV on in the background while browsing on their laptops or mobile devices. Different large scale events such as the Grand Slam tennis and the football in Africa can now be followed simultaneously. With more and more content available online this pattern of behaviour can only increase.

Sport and Politics mix in Summer Internet Traffic Surge

There is an old phrase that says that sport and politics don’t mix but they certainly did between the 22 and 24 June and in quite a remarkable way.

As George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, to the House of Commons began his Budget speech on the afternoon 22 June, two tennis players, American John Isner and French qualifier Nicolas Mahut, were preparing for a first round match at Wimbledon in what was to become the longest match in tennis history. The match began at 6:13pm on Tuesday evening and wasn’t completed until 4:48pm two days later after a total playing time of 11 hours and 5 minutes.

While the match wasn’t of any great significance to viewers in terms of who was playing,the sheer fact that the final set finished with an incredible score of 70 games to 68 in Isner’s favour kept the public hooked until the end. What was also grabbing people’s attention at this time was the finer detail of the first post-election Budget and the must-win England match against Slovenia in South Africa which took place on Wednesday afternoon.

All three events were largely intertwined in that there were key periods in coverage that overlapped and that the majority of it occurred during office hours.

Businesses that blog get 55% more visitors

Based on a survey in August of 1500 businesses by Hubspot, those that blogged had 55% more visitors, 97% more inbound links and 434% more indexed pages.

Most businesses accept, even if they don’t anticipate these sort of figures, that a blog will revolutionise their static corporate website, but trying to get momentum for that internally can be a trying business. Who’s going to write it, what will it look like, who’s going to build it.

Twitter can breathe life into older content

Yesterday afternoon I made four Twitter posts which listed all the external organisations featured in each of the last four issues of the LINX magazine, HotLINX. Each one included a link to the respective PDF they featured in. The result of this communication went well thanks largely to users interested in Extreme Networks.

Extreme featured in HotLINX17 which was published back in February and one of my followers saw my Tweet and decided then to re-Tweet it for their followers. This in turn was re-Tweeted again by further users. In total it was posted nine times resulting in 50 additional downloads inside an hour. This has led to me gaining new followers and our magazine gaining a wider readership.

The message is clear – there are people out there who are interested in what we are saying in the LINX magazine but if they don’t know about it, they can’t do anything about that information. If they are given the choice they can at least decide how to react to it.

1) Blog frequently

Most new bloggers dislike hearing this. Trust me when I say that the struggle for content is ongoing. New bloggers, however, feel like it`s just happening to them. The truth is, don`t get a blog just to have a blog. Get it and keep it updated. It`s the quickest way to gaining traffic. How often should you blog? Three times a week. The best days to blog? Studies have shown that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are key days for blogging.

2) Stay on point

I tell authors this a lot: stay on point, stay on topic. Why? Because if you don`t you`ll lose readership. Once someone commits to your blog they want to keep reading relevant information. So don`t blog one day about your book, your speaking, or your mission and the next day share Aunt Ethel`s pot roast recipe.

Alphainventions.com – Get your new blog viewed instantly

I would like to tell you about a neat little website that allows users to get instant views on your new blog posts. It is called alphainventions.com and is a bit of an enigma.

It’s creator is Cheru Jackson who describes himself as: “a regular working guy with an apartment and an old car with a big imagination”.

Cheru spent three months providing the coding a system where users could simply add a URL to their latest blog and see it added to loop of new blogs which appear in front of site viewers. The pages don’t remain on screen for long but if you have an interesting title, your page WILL be clicked upon.

On Cheru’s blog he provides a detailed explanation about Alpha Inventions:

If you update or publish your blog at the same time my visitors are browsing blogs in my site then my visitors will get a chance to see your blog in real-time. BAM! (the entire blog is in their face instantly) It’s not even annoying to watch.  Is it alpha addicts??
