“You are a boring man” – example of questionable customer service

I was in the main Peterborough Post Office yesterday and I was told that I was “a boring man” for not wanting a credit card or travel insurance. I can take a joke but I’d rather not be called “boring” by counter staff for not purchasing services I neither want nor need. It doesn’t bother me that much as it was supposed to be a joke but it’s a good example of how not to deal with customers – it lacks professionalism.

I decided to Twitter about it to see how long it takes for them to say anything to pacify someone badmouthing their organisation. After four similar tweets to @PostOfficeUK with no resposne I sent one to @RoyalMail who at least got back to me.

@RoyalMail Hi…sorry to hear about your experience, and trust that my colleagues @PostOfficeUK will be interested to hear about this.

I’ve heard nothing since.

Online marketers ‘should integrate a range of channels’

Direct marketing executives can enhance their online campaigns by integrating a range of platforms, an expert has said.

Dan Forootan, president of EZ Publishing, wrote for Smart Biz that marketers should take account of the fact that people receive digital messages through a variety of channels.

To do this, businesses can combine social media, mobile and email marketing campaigns, he said.

Mr Forootan noted that both email and mobile marketing offer particularly direct forms of one-to-one communication with potential clients.

Reasons to Leave Twitter

After attending the Social Media World Forum today at Olympia in London I decided to check out what people were saying about the event by clicking on the official Twitter hashtag topic, #SMWF. If that last sentence doesn’t make any sense let me explain…

Twitter hashtags are used to bring all posts on a particular topic in a single feed. Under normal circumstances it would involve real words such as #marketing or #socialnetworking but in the above example it has used an acronym. If you haven’t realised yet #SMWF stands for Social Media World Forum and this trend topic has been used in many different ways over the course of the two day event.

Some people have commented in real time during the workshops and seminars while others have posted questions for panel sessions. Others have spoken on what has been going on during the exhibition and at the post-event social gatherings. One such posting was of a blog which actually wasn’t connected to the event whatsover yet was retweeted many times by people who attended the event.

The blog in question was titled The Reasons I’m Leaving Twitter… which gave the following introduction:

About a year ago, I really loved Twitter. It was a lot of fun and it was great for communicating with people and for getting into all sorts of discussions. But as Twitter has grown, it’s become full of NOISE. Even, though, my follower count has risen, the response to my tweets has been on a steady decline. The reason is simple…

There’s just more and more noise on Twitter. People are following so many people that single tweets are easily missed in someone’s timeline. I’ve confirmed this decline with many other Twitter users. And it’s only going to get worse.

I won’t say anymore because all is not as it seems. The post was designed to spark debate and it has certainly done that on Twitter. Read on to find out more.

Social Media World Forum – Olympia, London

You can tell when the latest online phenomenen has really taken off when it inspires a multitude of conferences and trade shows for businesses to try to sell us something to enable us to use it better. There’s nothing wrong with that which is why I shall I be presenting myself at the Social Media World Forum registration desk at London Olympia for my delegate badge tomorrow morning.

Unlike a lot of shows I’ve attended recently I’m holding out high hopes for this one as the event program looks excellent. A wide variety of content to cover the multitude of uses of social networking and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Adam Parker of online PR agency Realwire present his workshop, The Press Release for an Online World or “Meatball Sundae”. This will look at the social media news release, who’s using them and how they can benefit PR and search engine optimisation (SEO). I know Adam personally so I know it will be excellent though I’m not so sure about his catering judging by that title!

Careering ahead: a look at recruitment and the job hunting process

Earlier this week I was invited to join a group called Jobcoach set up by Jobcentre Plus on the business networking site, LinkedIn. The aim of Jobcoach  is to bring together a range of professionals from different industries to offer recruitment advice for fellow professionals. graduates and school leavers. There has been lots of great feedback and debate so I thought I would cover some of the topics discussed and make my comments available for readers to view here.

Social media budget allocation will be 20 percent in five years

FurlongPR have published a story on how social networking budget allocation will approach 20% of marketing spend inside five years. This development is not all that surprising but I do wonder how social network marketing will develop in the meantime. With MySpace being usurpped by Facebook and Twitter’s rate of growth appearing to slow, who knows what the situation will be in a year let alone five.

Chief marketing officers in the US are quickly increasing their predicted social marketing budgets, finds a survey from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and the American Marketing Association, reported in eMarketer today.

Marketers researched in January 2010 now say their percentage spend on social media will increase further than they were predicting just six months previously. Their estimates show that in five years social media will represent 20% of their budgets.

HotLINX, the Magazine for the London Internet Exchange, is 10 Years Old This Year

One of my tasks in recent weeks has been the co-ordination and design of the latest edition of the London Internet Exchange’s membership magazine, HotLINX. When the first edition was published in the year 2000, it was intended to be an occasional, LINX member only newsletter. Over time it has developed to become a regular quarterly publication read by stakeholders right across the Internet industry.

Articles have covered technical and regulatory news, LINX member stories, event reviews, meeting sponsor advertorials, opinion pieces and helpful ‘How to…’ guides. Recipients include LINX members, vendors, colocation providers, news agencies as well as government officials and policy makers concerned with Internet regulation.

Traditionally HotLINX contained eight pages with a print run of just a few hundred copies. Following the success of the relaunch issue in August 2008, it quickly expanded to 12 and then a 16 page format with an increased circulation of 1250 printed copies distributed to some 50 countries worldwide. Then, in November 2009, LINX commemorated its 15th anniversary with a special edition of the magazine and made all archive issues available for download, some for the very first time.

The latest issue, HotLINX21, went online at 9.45am on Thursday 18 February and, as I type, has had over 450 downloads. This has helped all downloads break the 12000 barrier since August 2007. While these are not huge figures they have been seen in the context of the target audience and the rate of growth over the past year.

Some basic Tips for those new to Twitter

More and more people are using Twitter in a business context these days to help promote products and services. No longer is it just being considered as a banal method of telling friends and family what you had for dinner but a genuine bona fide communication tool.

Personally I have three Twitter accounts. One is for my employer for general announcements and information with a second personal work account too for more general industry chat. The third one is my own which is mostly used for my own purposes such as promoting blog posts from this site. It will be through this account I shall explain a few of the techniques you can use if you are new to Twitter.

I felt I should make ‘the new to Twitter’ clear as this is not meant to be for the regular users who have figured out how to use the thing. This is for those who may have set up an account and seen absolutely no benefit thus far. There are several reasons why this may be the case and I will come to those shortly.

At the time of writing I have over 1000 followers and I am following a good deal more than that. For my own purposes I could argue that my list people I follow has become too long but that is a discussion for another time. Where I benefit is having a significant number of followers who I can update on a range of topics whether directly related to my work or my marketing and communications blog.

Twitter is unfortunately not immune to the world of spam and I often see new followers who are there for completely spurious reasons. Without wanting to get too negative at the start I will cover why it’s important to keep a check on your followers in a later blog post and concentrate on how you develop your page in the short term.

Frankie Say…Marketing! (Part 2)

It’s just been revealed that the CD single of the recently remixed single Relax by Frankie goes to Hollywood has been cancelled. This follows the complete withdrawal of a planned release of The Power of Love for the Christmas market.

These two tracks were being used to promote a retrospective collection for the band called Frankie Say Greatest which was launched last month. While the album made the Top 30 in the UK, download sales of Relax were so poor it did not even make the Top 100.

A few weeks ago I added my first Frankie Say…Marketing! blog post on the methods being used to promote this set and made a few predictions on how well it would do. It turned out I was way off the mark.
